You don’t need a big budget to start. These five steps can be done within days, and they close the doors attackers use most.
1. Turn on two-step verification
On email, bank accounts, social media accounts and admin dashboards. Even if a password is stolen, the account stays protected.
2. Keep systems and software updated
Many breaches exploit flaws that were patched long ago. Turn on automatic updates for devices and browsers, and don’t postpone server updates.
3. Back up, and test the restore
Keep a copy of important files off site or in the cloud, and check from time to time that you can actually restore it. A backup that has never been tested may not work when you need it.
4. A different password for every account
Use a password manager instead of reusing the same password or writing it on paper, and stop sharing accounts between several employees.
5. Train your team to spot phishing
Spend half an hour showing staff what fake messages look like and how to report them. It’s the cheapest and most effective protection there is.
